Master the art and craft of woodworking through interactive digital applications and in-person immersions. Learn to design, simulate and visualize woodworking projects digitally before applying those skills hands-on during immersion weekends.
Required In-Person Immersion
This course requires attending two weekend immersion sessions per semester in Austin, TX. During these sessions, you'll apply your digital woodworking knowledge to real materials. Please review the immersion schedule below and ensure you can attend before enrolling.
Woodworking Digital Projects
Complete these digital projects to develop your woodworking knowledge and prepare for the in-person immersion sessions. Each project builds upon skills from previous ones and prepares you for hands-on work during the weekend immersions.
Woodworking Materials Visualizer
Build an interactive application for exploring wood types, grain patterns, and material properties.
Joinery Techniques Simulator
Create an interactive simulator for demonstrating and testing various woodworking joints and their applications.
Furniture Design Application
Develop an interactive furniture design tool with 3D modeling, ergonomic analysis, and construction planning features.
Advanced Woodworking Techniques Simulator
Create a comprehensive simulation of specialized woodworking techniques including wood turning, carving, inlay, and complex joinery.

Woodworking Studio, Austin Campus
Two full days (9am-5pm)
Introduction to woodworking tools, safety procedures, and basic techniques. Students will apply their digital designs through hands-on woodworking.
November 10-11, 2023
Woodworking Studio, Austin Campus
Two full days (9am-5pm)
Advanced joinery techniques and furniture construction. Students will implement their digital joinery designs in physical materials.
February 23-24, 2024
Woodworking Studio, Austin Campus
Two full days (9am-5pm)
Furniture design and prototyping. Students will construct physical versions of their digital furniture designs.
April 19-20, 2024
Woodworking Studio, Austin Campus
Two full days (9am-5pm)
Finishing techniques and advanced woodworking. Students will implement their advanced digital designs in physical form.
Immersion Requirements
For Digital Projects
- • Computer with modern web browser
- • GitHub account for project submissions
- • Basic understanding of web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
- • Camera for recording walkthrough videos
For In-Person Immersions
- • All tools and equipment provided on campus
- • Materials for immersion projects included
- • Appropriate clothing (closed-toe shoes, no loose items)
- • Personal safety glasses (optional, provided if needed)
- • Your completed digital projects (for reference during construction)
